Okawati, the founder and heart behind Okawati Boutique Bungalow. She is the daughter of the late Gung Biang Guling, the original pioneer of Ubud’s legendary suckling pig dish, and the sister-in-law of Ibu Oka, who now runs the iconic Babi Guling eatery on Jalan Suweta. The legacy began under the shade of a banyan tree near Ubud Palace, where Gung Biang Guling served her famous roast pork — a tradition that still lives on today.
Okawati’s own culinary journey began in the early 1960s, just before the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963. She started by selling traditional snacks near her mother’s food stall to locals and rice farmers, with her specialty being bubur kacang hijau (mung bean porridge). By 1974, at the age of 24, she opened her first small warung near what is now Terazo Restaurant on Jalan Suweta. Around this time, she also began offering a cozy homestay experience at her family compound — the same place where Ibu Oka now lives.
Her eclectic menu featured both local favorites and Western dishes such as cap cay, nasi goreng, scrambled eggs, guacamole, and fruit salad with homemade yogurt. “A friend from Hawaii taught me to make the yogurt, and others showed me how to prepare Western dishes,” she recalled with a smile. In the early 1980s, she expanded the business and moved it to a scenic spot amidst Ubud’s rice fields — the current location of Okawati Boutique Bungalow.
About the Accommodation
In the early days of Ubud’s tourism, luxury villas were unheard of. The most authentic way to experience Ubud was through homestays, where visitors lived with local families and immersed themselves in Balinese culture. It was a time when Ubud felt like an open-air theatre — afternoons spent on shop steps watching a parade of ducks, cows, motorbikes, and street vendors pass by. Even the eccentric old farmer shouting at traffic became part of the charm.
Back then, Okawati’s warung quickly became a favorite dining spot for both locals and wide-eyed travelers. Her warm hospitality and unique dishes earned a loyal following and set the stage for what would become one of Ubud’s most beloved boutique stays. Today, Okawati Boutique Bungalow continues that tradition — offering a genuine Balinese home experience combined with modern comfort, just a short walk from Ubud Palace.
